The Pet Librarian

Bryce:  "Hey, there’s another librarian!  YES!  I captured it.  Now I will take his books and put them around his fencing so he still thinks he’s like a librarian.  Well, good luck in there, fella.  I’m happy I discovered you."

Bryce, later on:  "There you go, librarian, more books.  Trust me, Mr. Librarian, you WILL want this book.  Or I will take it."

Minecraft Metaphor

Bryce: "When you *don't* need sheep, they're everywhere. When you *do* need them, they're hard to find. How pointless is that?!"

Tell me that is not a metaphor for sooo many things in life!

Cows and wolves

B: "Cows are excellent at running for their lives...NOT.  They are terrible at it!  Ooh, this one dropped some leather."

B: "Do you know what I like about tamed wolves? If you accidentally hit them, they won't kill you." Huh. Minecraft...or Neanderthal musings?

"Oops, caught the cow on fire. Cool—some steak!" Bryce, age 7

Bryce: "Hey there's a wolf. It won't attack me... Unless I attack it... Hey, wooooolf..."
Surely this will end well.

Heaven, hell and Minecraft

B, in a quiet voice: "In hell, I want to check out the devil's lair."
Not creepy at all. Thanks, Minecraft!
B: "Oh, hey! There's cake!"
 Me: "There's cake where?"
B: "In the demon's bunker."
Me: "Of course."

B: Hayden, look! I found wild red sheep!
Me: Why are they red?
B: Probably because of the devil.

B: "The hell in Minecraft is basically the Nether." *shows me a house in the sky*  "This is heaven. There's a great view.  Also, there's some dead chickens."

The Devil's Diamonds

Bryce:  The devil, mom!  The devil has diamonds!
Me: What?!  Is this a mod?
Bryce: No, it’s on a map.  And I stole the diamonds!  From the devil!  Now I’m lighting up his lair.
Me: ???

Minecraft is for learning

From Angie W--

Wesley, age 9: "Did you know you can learn stuff from playing video games? Like I didn't know you could make glass from cooking sand!"

Parents and educators are sometimes surprised to learn what a powerful educational tool the game of Minecraft actually is.  But it is!  For more on this, here is a great article:
Teaching In the Age of Minecraft, from The Atlantic Monthly

Sand and cacti

Bryce:  I need lots of sand.  It’s important.
Me:  Important why?
Bryce:  Getting cacti to throw to away things that are unneeded. I’m going to soon have a cacti farm.

The animal pit

Bryce: Yea! I got two cows in!  And a baby!
Me: In what?
Bryce: The animal pit I just made.  It’s a pit full of animals.  Visitors must be careful not to fall in it, or they’ll have to milk my cows.
Me: Right.
